As Paynes Bay is only a short distance to the south of the luxurious and prestigious Sandy Lane, this area in Barbados is prolific with luxury hotels, villas and apartments. Ch’An-Barbados Finest!

LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT

Karaoke is a wildly popular pastime on the island.  At night, the happy hour vibe becomes quite lively and karaoke seems to take over the local spots.  Those who have visited a karaoke bar or lounge will note that this is a mixed bag; while some amateur performers may shock you with unsuspected talent, most are horrifically off-key after a few rum punches, so always go with a sense of humor and a spirit of fun.  Also, do not be surprised if some of the island’s top singers, such as Ch’AN (photo above) drops in to try out a new song or just to warm up their vocal cords before a concert, if so, you will be truly blessed by the best!

PAYNES BAY FISH MARKET

Paynes Bay Fish Market is a small intimate market that provides a local opportunity for a full immersion into the island’s food, politics and people. The fishermen dock their fishing boats and offload the fish which is sold fresh to some of the finest hotels and restaurants. In addition, there are a number of regular customers who come down to stock up on their flying fish, dolphin, red snapper, sea cat or king fish and wait patiently to be served.  On Friday and Saturday nights, this small area comes alive with a coal pot stirring and fish, pork and chicken being fried on the spot. The lines are sometimes long and parking is tight, but the patrons wait as the food smells and tastes good, especially the seasoning. Breadfruit, coleslaw and tossed salad are some of the side dishes.
